Pomegranate
Pomegranate has an important role in the fruit production and foreign trade for Turkey. Turkey is located in the homeland of pomegranate. Mainly regular plantations production are made in Aegean, Mediterranean and Southeast Anatolia. Is’s grown in Finike, Kemer, Antalya, Izmir and Mersin regions. There are different varieties of fruit size, peel colour and thickness, grain colour, soft seeded and juiciness needs. There also differnt varieties for fresh market and industry. Important consumer contries are Russia, Germany, United Arab Emirates, Belgium and Denmark. Arab countries prefer sweet varieties where European countries prefer red skinned and sour pomegranates. Hijaz variety takes the main part of exports. (In EU countries) Pomegranates can be stored for 4-6 months in various conditions because of its special skin structure. Pomegranatesare also used industrially.
