During the periods when the Silk Road passed through Anatolia, citrus fruits were a commercial product coming from the vicinity of India. With the discovery of the Cape of Good Hope, trade routes changed, and the colonization of the Asian continent by European states led to the spread of orange production entirely to the vicinity of Portugal. Since it first arrived in Turkish lands from Portugal, it was called "Portakal" (Portugal's fruit), which eventually simplified and became known as "portakal" (orange) over time.
